Is there a distinct metabolomic profile between pregnant and lactating wild rabbits?

In a recent study, we analyzed whether there was a distinct metabolomic profile between pregnant and lactating wild rabbits. As we have mentioned before, rabbits are endangered animals and key to the Mediterranean ecosystem.
In this study, we examined the physical characteristics of the animals, what they ate, and their metabolomic profile. As conclusions from our work, we observed that there were practically no differences in their diet or physical characteristics; however, there was a significant differentiation regarding the metabolome.
There were certain metabolites that were present in higher concentrations in lactating females and others in pregnant females. Nevertheless, we could conclude that most of them were related to the metabolism of both energy and protein mobilization
This study helps to shed light on the metabolic pathways that animals use to ensure the success of their litters and will serve as a basis for other studies where the same metabolites found, for the first time, in this emblematic species appear.
