What is ecomatabolomics? Don’t panic.
What a word! Metabolomics is an omic science. This is even weirder. Omic means the set of something. Then… «metabolomics» will be the set of metabolites. Ecometabolomics will be the set of metabolites applied to ecology. Now that we know this we ask ourselves what is a metabolite? Molecules resulting from chemical reactions produced in cells.
Slowly. Studying ecometabolomics means that we can know all the metabolites of, for example, an animal (Like the fox you have in the image). And what does this matter? I will give you an example.
Imagine that I don’t know what effect climate change has on the health or behavior of animals. We can do a study that allows me to know how changes in environmental temperature modify these substances. Perhaps in this case,we realize that the hotter the animal is, it produces more of a certain substance and this can produce a certain risk. Having more knowledge in this regard can cause us to prepare ecosystems for these purposes.
I hope everything is a little clearer, it is a difficult concept but one that has great applicability. Right now we are working on a project in this sense.
